Effect of Interface Morphology on Bonding Properties of Titanium Clad Steel Plate

Interface morphology of composite plates has an important impact on the bond quality. The effect of wavy and straight interfaces morphology on mechanical properties of titanium clad steel plate was researched. By optical microscope and SEM the experimental results showed that the shear strength of wavy interface was higher than that of straight interface. During the bending process,cracks appeared in the swirl of wav tip and on the Ti-Fe intermetallic compound. In-situ observation of bending process by SEM, the wave tip on wavy interface and Ti-Fe intermetallic compound lump on straight interface were the places where crack initiation occurred. Wavy interface has more crack growth resistance than the straight interface.
