Study on Chemical Composition and Macro/Micro-Structure of a Large Sized Ti1023 Alloy Bar
Ti1023 is a near-beta titanium alloy with high fracture toughness, deep hardening potential and inherent ductility. But it is a segregation prone alloy that can exhibit a micro structural phenomenon known as beta-flecks, which can lead to low ductility and reduce fatigue strength. In order to eliminate this defect,a number of parameters were monitored and controlled during melting and forging process, such as the lower melt rate, reducing the ingot diameter and so on. However, the results were not very well. In this paper, +620 mm Ti-1023 ingot was manufactured with VAR through optimization melting parameter. The distribution of chemical composition in ingot was analyzed. It is found that the chemical composition is homogeneous, but the regularity of Fe distribution in the ingot is on the contrary with the results by other researchers. Then +350 mm bar was forged by two deforming schemes, named schemes 1 and 2, respectively. The micro/macrostructures were checked It is shown that the microstructure of the Ti-1023 consisted of fine α particle in an aged β matrix, no beta-flecks was observed in the microstructure by the two different schemes.
