Hot Workability of TIMETAL(R) 54M(Ti-5Al-4V-0.75Mo-0.5Fe)

TIMETAL(R) 54M(Ti-54M)is an α+β titanium alloy capable of attaining mechanical properties similar to Ti-6Al-4V. However, unlike Ti-6Al-4V,Ti-54M contains higher levels of Fe and lower levels of Al that help it achieve improved deformation behavior. Machinability studies on Ti-54M have reported superior tool wear rates over Ti-6Al-4V,at high machining speeds. Hot workability of Ti-54M,was assessed by conducting hot tensile tests, upset compression tests and non-isothermal spike forgings at typical bulk working conditions,i, e.,temperatures between 787-954℃,and strain rates between 10-3-1.0 s-1. This paper compares and contrasts results from tests on Ti-54M and Ti-6Al-4V,which include flow stress characteristics, tensile ductility, forging behavior, and microstructural observations.
