Influence of TiH2 Addition on the Solidification Structure of Ti6A14V Alloy by Induction Skull Melting

Hydrogen as a temporary element in titanium alloys is very good in controlling microstructure. Microstructure and phase transformation of Ti6A14V alloy affects by the amount of TiH2 added into melt of Ti6Al4V alloy during induction skull melting (ISM) process, named melt hydro-genation, was discussed in this paper by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope(SEM)and transmission electron microscope (TEM). After melt hydrogenation.both solidification macrostructure and microstructures of Ti6A14V alloy are refined. And α phase precipitates in the form of lamellar with residual β from the grain bourdary. There are δ-hydrides detected as a result of H remained during solidification process,. The dependence of the microhardness of specimens on weight percentage of TiH2 added into melt during ISM process was also studied. Phase δ with F. C C structure was observed by TEM in α phase lamina of specimens with 1. 5 wt% TiH2 ,and its formation mechanism was also discussed.
