Simulation of Air Cooling Process after Solution Treatment of BT22 Titanium Alloy Forged Bars

BT22 alloy was successfully developed by Soviet Union in 1974. This alloy can be applied for heavy forging, die forging and high-strength force bearing parts. BT22 is strengthened mostly by solution-aging treatment. The influence of inner temperature difference of big forged bars during heat treatment on mechanical properties is obvious. The characteristics of big BT22 forged bars which are cooled in air after solution are studied by means of experimental measurements and simulation method. In experiments a Pt-Rh thermocouple was placed in the hole which was drilled at the center of the Φ150mm× 250mm forged bar. The work piece was cooled after solution at 875℃ and the temperature change was recorded. The software of ANSYS 8. 0 was used for analyzing the inner temperature field of forged bar during heat treatment process. Our results shows that the temperature profile during air cooling after solution at 875℃ indicates a part of flat curve due to the β→α phase transformation. We used a three-dimensional finite element model to exactly predict the temperature distribution of the whole bar during cooling. A comparison was made between the calculated and measured temperature values. The results reveal that the relative error of two values is in the range of 2%-5%.
