Precipitation Sequences in Beta Metastable Phase of Ti-5553 Alloy During Ageing

In near beta titanium alloys,the precipitates morphology,their size and their spatial arrangement are strongly correlated to the precipitation sequences occurring during heat treatments. The present study concerns the precipitation processes during heating and ageing of beta metastable phase in a Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553) alloy. We focus on the influence of three parameters: heating rate, ageing temperature and chemical composition of the metastable beta phase. Transformation processes have been studied using continuous High Energy X-Ray Diffraction (HEXRD) and electrical resistivity. Depending on heat treatment paths,metastable phases such as isothermal omega (hexagonal) and/or alpha double prime (orthorhombic) precipitates may form before the transformation into alpha phase. The formation of these metastable phases clearly influences the final microstructure as well as their mechanical properties.
