Mechanical Properties of Titanium Alloys Produced in Egypt
This paper gives an overview about the development and research on Ti-alloys produced at Central Metallurgical R&D Institute (CMRDI) in Egypt during the past two years. CMRDI has already established an advanced medical implants production unit that includes vacuum induction skull melting furnace (ISM) and lost wax investment casting unit. Recently,CMRDI in cooperation with IWW of TU Clausthal, Germany has produced various titanium alloys belonging to the alpha-and alpha+beta alloy classes. The alloys successfully produced so far are cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V and VT9. The above alloys were produced using vacuum induction skull melting furnace resulting in bars having diameters and lengths of 30mm and 300mm,respectively. Optimum processing conditions for each alloy were determined in order to get sound cast bars. The chemical composition of the alloys was controlled by spectroscopy. Mechanical properties of each alloy were determined in tensile tests. In addition, fatigue performance was tested in rotating beam loading (R=-1) after applying mechanical and chemical surface treatment processes. Results of the tensile and fatigue testing are discussed and interpreted in light of the microstructure analysis.
