In Situ SEM/EBSD Observations of hcp/bcc Phase Transformations in Commercially Pure Titanium

In situ observations of the phase transformation phenomena between hcp (α) and bec (β) phases in commercially pure titanium were attempted using SEM/EBSD technique combined with heating stage. Commercially pure titanium sheets with recrystallized α grain microstructure and typical TD-split texture component (01-13<2-l-10>) were manufactured by cold rolling and annealing process for this investigation. As for the a to β phase transformation during heating process, the evolved β grains have the Burgers OR with the initial α grain microstructure. Moreover, the specific orientation components (001<100>) tend to be dominant in the β phase in the observed area. The reverse phase transformation during cooling process also shows the Burgers OR between the nucleating a grains and the parent β grains. Especially, the developed α grains have the Burgers OR with the both adjacent parent β grains, having a rotation about a common 110 pole. This variant selection is supposed to be related to the above-mentioned preferred orientation distribution of the β phase. From these results, some variant selection occurs during α/β phase transformations and it is revealed that these direct observations are effective to light on the phase transformation phenomena from the viewpoint of the change in local texture and microstructure.
