Age-hardening Behaivour and Microstructure of Ti-15-3 Alloy Aged at 573 K

Age-hardening behaivour and microstructure of a Ti15-3 alloy aged at 573 K was studied using Vickers hardness testing method and transmission electron microscopy. The age-hardening behaviour of specimens with different thickness of 0.62,1.15 and 10. 0 mm was investigated, and it was found that the behaviour depends on specimen thickness. As the thickness increases, the aging time to the peak hardness value becomes longer and the peak hardness value decreases. At the early stage of aging, ω-phase precipitates were observed by means of transmission electron microscope observation method, but as aging time increases,it was confirmed that orphase precipitates decreased while a-phase and new-phase (ω-like) phase precipitates were gradually increased. In the specimen indicating the peak hardness value, both of a-phase and new-phase precipitates were dominantly observed, while or phase precipitates were hardly observed. Consequently, it is confirmed that the age-hardening behaviour of this alloy at 573 K is decided by the details of formation of these two a-phase and new-phase precipitates. In addition, the crystal structure of new-phase precipitates is not still clarified.
