Densification Behavior of Ti-5Al-2. 5Sn ELI Prealloyed Powders Under Hot Isostatic Pressing

The densification behavior of Ti-5Al-2. 5Sn ELI prealloyed powders in low carbon steel containers was investigated by interrupting experiments at various stages of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) cycle. The cross-section and tensile fracture of the porous compact body were observed by optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope respectively, while the density was measured by an Archimedes principlebased method. Four stages with different mechanisms dominant in powder densification were identified as follows: slow removal of container shielding effect below 640℃,quick particle flow from 640℃ to 740℃,heavy plastic deformation from 740℃ to 840℃ ,and slow removal of isolated pores from 840℃ to 940℃. Compacts of powders with a broader particle size distribution exhibit a higher densification rate at both the second and third stages. The result can be explained by assuming a sufficient number of small particles sliding around large ones, leading to close packing and preferential and heavy deformation of the small particles, thus accelerating the densification process
