Microstructure and Texture Inhomogeneity in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al

The metstable beta titanium alloy Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al is used in aircraft landing gear due to its excellent strength-density ratio. However, the alloy suffers from deformation-induced texture inhomogeneity, and this restricts its broader use. This paper examines some of the relationships between the microstructure, texture, and texture inhomogeneity in Ti-10-2-3. The texture was investigated by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction. In its as-received state the material was forged at 760℃ and this was followed by a heat treatment at the same temperature. A rotated cube texture 001<110>and γ fiber textureare the dominant betα phase texture in this state. Analysis of the EBSD results revealed the expected Burgers relationship between the alphα phase and beta matrix in the as-received plate. Through-thickness texture was studied by X-ray diffraction. The texture evolves from γfiber toward rotated cube texture from surface to the center. After further heat treatment at 820℃, both the beta and alphα phases form a recrystallization texture and the Burgers relationship is no longer obvious.
