Impact Deformation of Large Colony Ti6A14V

The impact deformation mechanism of Ti6Al4V is of interest for aerospace and other applications where the material may be subjected to a sudden external force such as bird strike. This research studies the deformation mechanism of Ti6Al4V with a large colony size under different conditions using transmission electron microscopy. The original as-rolled Ti6A14V alloy was slow cooled from the β phase and subjected to impact test at liquid nitrogen temperature and room temperature, with the impact energy varying from 10J to 300J. Deformation twinning has been observed in all specimens tested. In addition to the TEM observations, the nature of the twinning and its role in the impact deformation will be discussed vis-a-vis literature on the plastic deformation of the alloy system.
