Betα phase Decomposition during Ageing in Beta Ti Alloy with and without Carbon Additions

Phase transformations in beta Ti-13Cr with and without carbon have been studied by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and compared with those found in Ti-15-3 with and without carbon. This research focuses predominantly on the decomposition of meta-stable betα phase after quenching and during ageing. The omegα phase is formed prior to the alphα phase below 500℃ in Ti-13Cr, while alphα phase precipitates directly from betα phase above 500℃. There is no obvious influence of C on the scale or kinetics of omega precipitation although coarsening of omega is accelerated in the C-containing alloy. Nevertheless,no evidence for omegα phase has been obtained in Ti-15-3. Two types of alpha precipitates have been observed in Ti-13Cr.
