Effects of Thermo-mechanical Treatments on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties :TIMETAL-54M vs. Ti-6Al-4V
TIMETAL-54M was recently developed by TIMET, Henderson,NV (USA). The addition of small amounts of the β-stabilizers Mo and Fe and the reduction in Al-content reduce the β-transus temperature relative to Ti-6A1-4V and offer improved formability as well as better machinabili-ty. Thus,TIMETAL-54M is supposed to provide a cost benefit for parts that require extensive machining. Well defined microstructures (fully equiaxed, fully lamellar and duplex) were generated in both TIMETA1-54M and TI-6A1-4V and the mechanical properties with emphasis on fatigue performance compared. On average, the high cycle fatigue performance of TIMETAL-54M is slightly superior to Ti-6A1-4V, this effect being addressed to the contribution of solid solution hardening that is more pronounced in TIMETAL-54M than in Ti-6A1-4V.
