Study of Deformation Mechanisms in an α-β annealed Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Alloy on Charpy Specimens

Crack propagation mechanisms have been investigated,on a Ti-6A1-4V α-β titanium alloy, through Charpy tests. Different Charpy specimen orientations were tested and results showed a dependence of the impact toughness regarding to this orientation. Evidence of a strong crystallograph-ic texture has been revealed thanks to X-ray Diffraction. This texture is attributed to the rolling process to achieve the 12 mm thick Ti-6A1-4V plate. Electron BackScattering Diffraction (EBSD) analyses underlined a pile-up of macrozones in which the texture is very intense. Cristal orientation in these macrozones seems to influence strongly the impact toughness as they can act either as reinforcements or as weak points for the material like in composite structures. Depending on the solicitation direction of these macrozones, prismatic slip or twinning could be identified. Twining of the α phase can result from the high strain occurring during the test and from the sharp texture of the material.
