Characteristic Tensile Deformation Behaviors in Ti-5Al-2Fe-3Mo
To grasp the fundamental properties in a high strength p rich α+β type titanium alloy,Ti-5Al-2Fe-3Mo (Super-TIX(r)523AFM) .effects of solution treatment conditions at temperatures in the high α+β region just below the β transus (955℃) on mechanical properties at room temperature were investigated with emphasizing on the phase transformations during heat treatment and deformation. Mechanical properties were considerably different depending on the solution treatment conditions and some conditions extracted quite unique mechanical properties:The specimens solution treated at 900 and 930℃ followed by water quenching exhibited distinctive two-step work hardening on the stress-strain curves, accompanied with quite low 0. 2% proof stress (400-600MPa), low Youngs modulus (around 78Gpa) and high tensile strength (12501400MPa). Meanwhile the other specimens exhibited monotonous stress-strain curves with high 0. 2% proof stress (900-1000MPa), high Youngs modulus (95120GPa) and slightly lower tensile strength (10001100MPa). The characteristic tensile deformation behaviors in the former specimens were attributed to the low phase stability of the transformed p phase, deformation induced martensitic transformations in the transformed p phase (β →α→αand α→α in the specimens solution treated at 900 and 930℃ .respectively, followed by water quenching) and conspicuous work hardening behaviors ofα.
