Trial Manufacturing and Characterization of Tungsten Fiber Reinforced Titanium Composite
Titanium has good properties of high strength, low density, high heat resistance and so on. Therefore titanium is often used as the functional materials in industrial field. On the other hand, tungsten has also the excellent properties of high strength and high melting point in all metals. In this study,tungsten reinforced titanium composites (W/Ti) were manufactured by a new simple process. In the traditional making method,the W/Ti composite was produced by a casting method. In this method, the castings system should be setting within a large vacuum chamber to prevent the oxidation of the molten titanium matrix at high temperature. The new trial in this study used the easy and simple system of the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding method substituting for the casting method within the vacuum chamber. Many process conditions were tired to produce the W/Ti composite by TIG welding method and stable conditions were found. From the microscopic observation in the cross section of the W/ Ti composite,diameter of tungsten fibers decreased in many cases. It is assumed that these phenomena were caused from the diffusion of titanium matrix into tungsten fiber at the high temperature process. Furthermore,these reducing of the diameter in tungsten fibers were investigated in several positions of the W/Ti sample. On the other hand, the tensile strength of the W/Ti composite was estimated by tensile test and the fracture surface was observed by SEM. Finally,the condition of residual stress in both of tungsten fiber and titanium matrix was measured by X-ray stress measurement method.
