Fatigue life Variations Due to Microstructure in Ti 6Al 4V

The fatigue properties of different microstructural variants of the titanium alloy Ti 6A1 4V have been shown to vary significantly, with attempts to correlate the data based purely upon optical measurements to describe the microstructure showing no discernable success. An alternative approach, where the effective structural unit size of the material is considered, shows promise in correctly ordering the microstructural variants. In order to determine the effective structural unit size polarized light will be proposed as an alternative to the more technically demanding and costly EBSD. The response of the microstructural variants under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions is considered and it is demonstrated that significant differences occur between the two in terms of the controlling microstructural feature.
