Machinability of TIMETAL 54M Evaluated by Milling

54M (Ti-5A1-4V-0. 75Mo-0. 5Fe) is an alpha-beta titanium alloy that provides a machinability benefit over Ti-6A1-4V (Ti64) while offering similar tensile properties. Previous drilling and turning trials on 54 M have shown improved tool life at high machining speeds. A test method has been developed to evaluate machinability by end milling using a HURCO CNC milling machine. The machinability of 54 M has been evaluated in comparison to Ti64 for two heat treatment conditions. The end milling test results include tool wear as a function of surface travel machined, chip characterization, and surface roughness measurements. The mechanical properties, microstructures, and surfaces of the test materials are also examined. The evaluation of mill annealed and beta annealed 54M and Ti 64 with a uniform set of milling parameters shows that, for transverse: billet slices in a given heat treatment condition, 54 M can be machined with less damage to the tool inserts and workpiece than Ti64. Thus, 54 M enables increased tool life as compared to Ti64.
