The Role of Gd Addition in the Microstructure and Mechanical Property of Directionally Solidified Ti46A10. 5W0. 5Si Alloys

The microstructure and compressive properties of directionally solidified Ti46Al0. 5W0. 5Si and Ti46Al0. 5W0. 5Si0. 165Gd alloys were investigated. The macrostructure of the ingots obtained in rapid casting consisted mainly of coarse columnar grains parallel to the axial direction of the ingots. The Ti46Al0. 5W0. 5Si alloys have a nearly fully lamellarstructure (α2/γ) with γ/Ti5Si3 and some W-rich B2 phases. Gd was oxidized and formed Gd2TiO5, which would refine grains. The specimens with growth direction parallel to the loading direction have a higher strength than those with growth direction perpendicular to the loading direction.
