Fatigue Behaviour of Advanced γ TiAl Alloys Subjected to Small Particle Impacts

Laboratory simulated domestic object damage (DOD) was imposed on aerofoil style specimens manufactured from a latest generation gamma titanium aluminide (Ti-46Al-8Ta) .developed under the European Union research project IMPRESS. The form of the damage site, produced using small steel cube projectiles impacting either the centre of a flat plat or at the very edge of an aerofoil style laboratory specimen, was characterised in detail. Aerofoil specimens containing varying degrees of damage were then assessed under fatigue loading at room temperature and 650℃. A reduction in fatigue strength due to the presence of DOD was shown to be sensitive t6 the projectile impact energy but independent of test temperature. Comparisons with damage introduced into nickel plate materials and aerofoils will be made.
