Fabrication of Continuous SiC Fiber Reinforced Ti-Al Intermetallic Composites using Elemental Foils
Continuous SiC fibers reinforced Ti-Al intermetallic composite has been fabricated by elemental foils and SiC fibers using hot-pressing (HP). The microstructure and phases formation of the sintered samples under different heat treatment conditions were detected by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS);the density of the samples was tested through the Archimedes principle. The results show that the self-propagating high- temperature synthesis (SHS) occurs between solid Ti and melting Al when the heating temperature is above the Al melting point, the matrix contained TiAl and Ti3Al;a thin interface phase was formed between fibers and matrix during this reaction procedure. After hot-pressing,a dense composite was formed.
