Microstructure Refinement and Improvement of Mechanical Properties of as-cast TiAl Based Intermetallics with Yttrium and Boron Addition

The influence of boron (B) and rare earth metal yttrium(Y) on microstructure and mechanical properties or as-cast Y-modified TiAl-Based alloys with nominal chemical compositions of Ti-45Al-5Nb- (B, Y) alloy has been investigated in this study. The results show that with the addition of the Y,the alloy is composed of γ,α2 and YAl2 phase forms mainly the lamellar colony boundaries as elongated or rounded particles and slightly inner the colonies as the finer particles. The microstructure of the alloy is remarkably refined including the lamellar colony size and lamellar spacing than Y-free alloys. The alloy has moderate tensile strength and ductility at room temperature, and the mainly reason for the improvement of Y-bearing TiAl alloy is superposition of the lamellar spacing and fine colony size. Cracks primarily propagate in transgranular mode in spite of the testing method.
