Development of Welding Technologies in Titanium Component Manufacturing
The paper analyses peculiarities of using different welding methods for making permanent joints on titanium and titanium-base alloys. The technologies developed by the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute for TIG welding of titanium over the flux layer and by using a flux-cored wire, as well as the technological processes of welding and reconditioning surfacing with the electric arc controlled by the external magnetic field are described in detail. Metallurgical and technological principles of the titanium welding processes are considered, and ways of improving their efficiency and weld quality are presented The possibilities of employing new welding methods (laser welding,low-vacuum electron beam welding, etc. ) for joining of titanium are shown. Investigation results are given on producing the joints between dissimilar metals, such as titaniumsteel, titanium-copper and titanium-intermetallicby using solid-state joining.
