Microstructure and Mechanical Property of Linear Friction Weldment of a Nearalpha Titanium Alloy Ti-60
Microstructure and mechanical properties of linear friction weldment of a near α titanium alloy Ti-60 has been investigated in this study. While the base metal (BM) showed bimodal microstructure consisting of equiaxed primary a and transformed β structure, the weld center (W) exhibited broken acicular martensite a produced by hot deformation and high cooling rate associated with linear friction welding (LFW). It is observed in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) that the bimodal microstructure of base metal was deformed and transformed to the structure consisting of martensitic α laths and secondary α laths sandwiched with elongated α grain. The tensile results have shown that all the weldments exhibited good tensile strength and ductility as compared to the base metal.
