Effect of Modified-Oxide Mold on the α-case for Titanium Lost Wax Casting

Titanium has excellent corrosion resistance and specific strength. Titanium can be applied to biomaterials, such as in dental implants and artificial joints, because of its high biocompatibility. Notably, one method of titanium casting, called lost wax casting, has good accuracy and,can economically produce complex shapes. However, the α-case is formed during solidification because of the high reactivity of titanium at elevated temperatures. Because oxygen and metal elements from the oxide mold react with titanium. The αcase, which is comprised of enriched oxygen and a metallic element,is drastically deteriorates the ductility of titanium cast. Accordingly, the α-case must be eliminated. In general, zircon and zirconia are widely used as oxide mold materials. Recently, yttria and rare earth oxides have been used in the study of mold materials for use with titanium casting in order to control the αcase. Despite all of these efforts, oxide molds have not been developed to be free of the α-case. In this study, to produce and assess an oxide mold that can control the α-case on the titanium surface,an alumina mold was modified to have α-case constituents. The titanium was casted into the oxide mold and the interfacial reaction was evaluated.
