The Fluidity of Cast Ti-1100 Alloy in a Centrifugal Casting Machine

Ti-1100 is a successful near-alpha alloy working at 600℃ designed for aerospace industry,which is usually processed by forging. But for complex components,investment casting shows more advantages. It is necessary to investigate the castability of Ti1100 alloy,especially the characteristics of fluidity. In this study,a spiral line pattern was applied to evaluate the fluidity capacity. Three types of 600℃ high temperature titanium alloys (Ti1100, IMI834 and BT36) and a Ti-6Al-4V alloy were poured into the mould with ZrO2 primary coating for comparing the fluidity capacity. The results indicated the Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibited the best fluidity capacity. Among 600℃ high temperature titanium alloys, Ti-1100 displayed the best fluidity,followed by IMI834,and lowest fluidity for BT36. Three types of primary coating materials (ZrO2, Y2O3 and Al2O3) were adopted to prepare the spiral line pattern shell for investment casting. It was found that the Ti-1100 alloy presented the best fluidity capacity with Y2O3 primary coating of the shell. The results of the present study demonstrate the Ti-1100 alloy is suitable for investment casting. The Y2O3 primary coating is a reliable and promising choice for Ti-1100 alloy investment casting.
