The Vacuum Heat Treatment of Titanium Alloys for Commercial Airframes
From a materiala point of view ,the Boeing 787 Dreaminer is one of the most revolutionary leaps in the history of aerospace manufacturing. By designing the 787 airframe with 50% of its weigth as composites ,it precluded the fact that more,higher strength ,and near beta titanium alloys had to be utilized. Fifteen percent of the 787s airframe is mode from titanium. The five main areas where the largest concentartion of titanium is used are in the landing gear.strural fittings,floor structure,extusions,and nacelles. For this discussion we will review basic vacuum and pyrometry technologies. We will then relate this information to the critical heat treatments of various? airframe titaniun components. The talk will conclude with highlighting some of the major pitfalls inherent within aerospaces antiquated titanium heal: treating specifications.
