Effect of Powder Feeding Rate on in Situ Synthesis of HA/Ti Composite Coating
In situ laser cladding is a novel way to fabricate hydroxyapatite(HA) coating on Ti substrate using mixed powders of CaCO3 and CaHPO4. Powder feeding rate is one of the major parameters that influence laser cladding,so its effect on fabrication process and microstructure of the coating was studied. During fabrication process, the temperature of the laser melt pool will increase with the powder feeding rate since the laser absorption rate of the mixed powders is higher than that of Ti. It is also found that the mixed powders and Ti substrate will react with each other and form a transitional zone between the bioceramic coating and the Ti substrat. Meanwhile, the size and number of the pores in the coating increase with the powder feeding rate. And the coating will become loosen when the powder feeding rate is too high, which will make the bioceramic coating become brittle and degrade the mechanical properties of the coating.
