Porosity and Microstructures of Porous Ti-Mo Alloys for Biomedical Application by Gelcasting
We have prepared porous Ti-Mo alloys from elemental powders by gelcasting. The characterization and gelling behavior of Ti-Mo slurry were investigated by altering parameters. The microstructure and the total porosity of the vacuum sintered porous Ti-Mo alloys were analyzed by using electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Added Mo powder has an acceleration effect on idle time of Ti gelcasting system and dramatically influence the viscosity of slurry. The result shows that total porosity approximately 38-48 vol% and pore size ranging 5-110 μm can be achieved, respectively. The microstructure of Ti-Mo alloys sintering at 1000°C contains a mixture of α and β phase. The Youngs modulus of porous Ti-Mo alloys under investigation is close to that of human cortical bone, which is expected to exhibit great potential as a biocompatible implant material.
