Qualification of the High-Strength ASTM Grade 29 Titanium Alloy for Static and Dynamic Corrosive,Sweet and Sour Service
The energy industry has long had a need for a highstrength, highly corrosion-resistant and fusionweldable alloy with which critical components can be reliably designed and utilized under static and dynamic corrosive sweet and/or sour service conditions. The specific alloy groomed for these demanding energy requirements over the past fifteen years is ASTM Grade 29 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V-0.1Ru-ELI) .which has been extensively utilized in offshore hydrocarbon production riser terminations (i. e. , taper stress joints) and hypersaline geothermal brine well production and rein-jection casing. To qualify this alloy for static well components (OCTG,casings/liners) and dynamic/cyclically-loaded offshore risers,it was nec- essary to evaluate Grade 29 Ti wrought and weld metal corrosion, fatigue, and fracture resistance in air, seawater, and sweet and sour chloride trines to high temperatures for development of user guidelines and design equations. This paper overviews; the scope of Grade 29 titanium mought and welded product testing and qualification, resultant property design equations/requirements and design codes established, and the nange of applicable environmental limits in relevant energy service.
