Study on Preparing Spherical Nickel Coated Titanium Powders by Electroless Plating and Radio-frequency Plasma

The fine spherical nickel coated titanium powders (520μm ) were prepared by coarse titanium hydride powders (2050μm). That is,the nickel coated titanium hydride powders were prepared by electroless plating firstly, then such coated powders were spheroidized by radio frequency (RF) plasma treatment and vacuum dehydrogenation, finally the fine spherical nickel coated titanium powders were prepared. Ti-Ni composite powders were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction, and the micrograph of the coated powders were observed by Scanning Electron Microscope. The results indicate that activation and sensitization of titanium hydride powders can improve the surface activity effectively, which was beneficial for electroless nickel plating. The best electroless nickel plating process parameters were as follows: the concentration of NiSO4·6H2O was 30-35g/ L, the amount of hydrazine hydrate was 10-13ml/L,reaction temperature was 70-80℃ and the pH value was 9-10. The coarse composite powders of nickel coated titanium hydride were explored and broke to fine spherical powders during RF plasma treatment. Nickel-titanium intermetallic compounds were founded in the interface of coated spherical powders. Finally, pure Ti-Ni composite powders were produced by vacuum dehydrogenation, which was to further remove a small amount of residual TiH phase and residual stress
