Titanium Application in Structures Operating in Sea Water

Titanium alloys, thanks to their high corrosion resistance and corrosion-mechanical strength in sea water conditions.are widely used in shipbuilding structures,offshore industry,nuclear power engineering and in some other fields. The main world tendencies and achievements in the field of titanium alloys marine application for the last years as well as the most important advances in this direction reached in the CIS have been analyzed in this paper. Some examples of titanium application in pipe systems of different purposes having contact with sea water are considered in the paper. In sea water conditions titanium pipes have a considerable advantage over pipes made of conventional materials such as stainless steels and copper and copper-nickel alloys. Titanium pipes are characterized by high erosion resistance and high resistance to such dangerous kinds of corrosion as pitting, spot,intercrystalline and jet corrosion. It is shown that the range of titanium pipes application is being constantly extended. Titanium pipes find wide application not only in general shipbuilding systems but also in power engineering systems (steam generators,condensers, auxiliary heat exchanging equipment). For the present more than 3000 units of steam generators and more than 6000 units of auxiliary heat exchangers for nuclear power plants are produced in Russia of titanium. The importance of titanium has especially increased as a consequence of a tendency, which has become evident in the world now,of extension of structures service life (up to 50 years and more) with a minimum volume of maintenance. When structures operate in sea water only titanium can practically provide a required endurance along with reliability and safety.
