Fourth Yangtze Forum Sub-forum on Climate Change and Water Resources
Introduction Climate change, in addition to technological and societal changes, will create an increasing demand for civil engineering works. Sea level rise not only requires flood safety measures, it will also affect estuaries and the accessibility of harbours. Changes in vegetation, land use, sediment yield and precipitation will affect not only flood levels, but also the morphology of rivers. Recent flood disasters in Asia have shown how much of a threat a suspended river may constitute to the surrounding land. And with the shifting of climate zones ecosystems will change, so a static environmental conservation approach no longer works.
