Study on Eeologieal Requirements and Operation for Flood at Natural Reproduction of the Four Major Chinese Carps in the Middle Reach of the Yangtze River, China

Flood has very important significance to ecological processes of fish. The relationships between Ecological functions of flood and the key stages of fishs growth are described as this paper. The impacts of flood discharge, occurrence time of flood on the different fish stages of life were also analyzed. Four important economic fishes involved the black carp, grass carp, silver carp and bighead carp that live in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River utilized for this study. Ecological requirements for flood in their natural breeding season were analyzed. The result showed that water rising rate in a day and rising duration were important to four major Chinese carps nature spawning requirements. Flood characteristics differences before and after Three Gorges Reservoir impoundment were also studied. Contrast to that before Three Gorges Reservoir impoundment, first flood occurrence time was delayed 5 days, rising duration was reduced 0. 43 days and rising range was decreased 0. lm. Due to Changes of some flood characteristics, it is obviously existed about badly impacts on four major Chinese carps nature spawning. Based on analysis between hydrological characters and the key stages of fish s growth , feasible ecological operation of Three Gorges Reservoir attained aim to provide a reference for protecting the fishes in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River.
