WATER MANAGEMENT AND PHASE CHANGE ON THE CATHODE SIDE OF PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE FUEL CELLS
Water management is one of the main issues to be properly handled for proton exchange membrane fuel cell commercialization. The proper water management requires good understanding of water transport within the cell. This paper will focus on the effects of phase change between the gaseous and liquid phases of water on the cathode side of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Modelling techniques used to estimate the phase change will be outlined at both micro- and macro scale levels. Experimental visualization of liquid water within the fuel cell with emphasis on the phase change will also be covered and discussed. It becomes clear that phase change is a subject worthy of more interest, as it helps to understand the saturation phenomenon, as well as transport of heat, mass and charges in the multifunctional materials.
