BIOFUEL PRODUCTION FROM MICROALGAE BIOMASS
Microalgae have high potential to effectively capture CO2 emission through photosynthesis and convert into clean fuels such as biodiesel and biogas. The main research work on microalgae energy at Zhejiang University includes: (1) Mutate microalgae to increase biomass yield and lipids content by nuclear irradiation and genetic modification. (2) Develop efficient photosynthetic bioreactors to grow microalgae with high density and reduce CO2 from flue gas. (3) Biodiesel production from microalgae lipids through transesterification and hydrothermal reactions. (4) Cogenerate H2 and CH4 from microalgae biomass by two-stage anaerobic fermentation. (5) Bioelectricity generation by microbial fuel cell with microalgae biomass. (6) Demonstration project of biofuels production from microalgae biomass with CO2 fixation from flue gas in a coal-fired power plant. It is promising to effectively collect microaigae biomass wildly grown in sea and industrially convert into biofuels.
