Modified carbon felts used as positive electrode for all vanadium redox flow battery

Pristine carbon felts were modified through the heat treatment at different temperatures for one hour in the inert gases and used as positive electrode for all vanadium redox flow battery (VRB). The structures, electrochemical properties and battery performances are investigated with scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and cell charge-discharge testing. The electrochemical activities of the carbon felts are significantly improved over those modified carbon felts. The peak currents of the redox reactions of the carbon felt treated at 1100oC for 1 hour (40.59 m A and -33.79 m A for oxidation and reduction processes, respectively) are about twice those for the untreated carbon felts. The battery shows better storage performances when the modified carbon felts were used as positive electrodes than those of the untreated carbon felts. The decomposition of the amorphous carbon on the carbon fibers is supposed to be the key reason for the increase of the electrochemical activity through the SEM results because more effective reaction places can be provided for VO2 +/VO2+ redox couple.
