A NOVEL REDOX FLOW BATTERY WITH HIGH ENERGY DENSITY BASED ON THE ZINC /POLYHALIDE REDOX CHEMISTRIES
A novel zinc/polyhalide redox flow battery (ZPB) is proposed, which employs Br-/CIBr2-and Zn/Zn2+ redox couples in the positive and negative half-cells respectively. The reversibility of the redox chemistries was investigated by cyclic voltammetry measurements. The performance of ZPB was evaluated by charge-discharge cycling tests at the current density of 20 mA/cm2. A high energy efficiency of 81% was achieved based on the coulombic efficiency of 96% and the voltage efficiency of 84%. Especially, the actual energy density of ZPB could be above 77 Wh/kg. Therefore, the ZPB technology is expected to provide high performance and energy density at an acceptable cost.
