ANALYTICAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF A NOVEL SOLAR- WIND ENERGY EXTRACTION SYSTEM
A novel solar-wind energy extraction system is proposed and described in this paper. The system is an innovative combination of the solar chimney and tornado-type wind tower. In the design, a tornadotype wind tower is installed at the exit of the chimney to capture the high-elevation wind energy and create a pressure deficit at the chimney out through an artificial vortex inside the tower. The proposed system can obviously increase the power generation by using the high-elevation wind energy, which can considerably alleviate the difficulty of constructing a gigantic concrete chimney for the conventional solar chimney thermal power system. Meanwhile, in view of the complementarities of the solar and wind energy, the novel system has higher continuity, stability and reliability. A theoretical model was developed to find the major factors affecting the power generation. In addition, a numerical simulation was carried out for a small-scale solar-wind energy extraction system to further investigate the system performance, which shows reasonable agreement with the analytical model.
