R&D OF HIGH ENERGY DENSITY Ll-S RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES
The limited specific energy density (usually less than 150 Wh kg-1) of the commercial lithium ion batteries which is restricted by the intercalation cathode materials with standard specific capacities of 110 ~ 170 mAh g-1, is a bottleneck for the development of advanced electric vehicles (Evs). Therefore, it is urgent to explore the higher specific capacity cathode materials and the novel rechargeable battery systems. Sulfur is an attractive cathode material for rechargeable batteries due to the high theoretical specific capacity of 1675 mAh g-1 and a high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh kg-1 for Li-S system 1. Besides, it is natural abundance, low cost, and environmental benignancy.
