DENSITY DEPENDENCE OF THE YIELD OF eaq IN THE LOW-LET RADIOLYSIS OF SUPERCRITICAL WATER AT 400 °C: MONTE-CARLO SIMULATIONS

The density dependence of the yield of hydrated electrons (e. aq) in the low linear energy transfer (LET) radiolysis of supercritical water (SCW) at 400 °C has been computed over the range from ~0.15 to 0.6 g/cm3 using Monte-Carlo simulations. This study was motivated by the experimental e. aq yield data obtained recently in Tokai, Japan by Muroya et al.1,2 using time-resolved picosecond electron pulse radiolysis, at ~60 ps (end of pulse) and 1 ns. Another motivation was the strong difference observed in scavenging experiments between the e. aq yields in low-density SCW measured by Janik et al.3 (corrected in a recent erratum by Haygarth et al.4) and Haygarth and Bartels5 in Notre Dame, U.S.A. (~1.5 molecules/100 eV at a density near 0.2 g/cm3) and those reported by Lin et al.6 at the University of Tokyo (~5.3 molecules/100 eV at the same density), and whose origin has not yet been explained.
