CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF A HIGH-PRESSURE-D2O-MODERATED SUPER-CRITICAL WATER REACTOR?
Candu Energy Inc. (Candu) has assessed conceptual reactor designs and layout options of a highpressure-D2O-moderated vertically-oriented pressure tube super critical light water reactor (HPMSCWR).The HPM-SCWR is a pressure tube reactor with a calandria vessel pressure higher than that ofcurrent CANDU reactor designs. The pressurized calandria vessel contains: the high-pressure D2Omoderator, a lattice of vertically oriented re-entrant channel (REC) fuel channels operating at SCWconditions, vertically-oriented bottom-mounted reactor regulating and control mechanisms, and aSCW collecting chamber. The concept separates the pressurized D2O moderator, located withinthe vessel, and the SCW H2O coolant, flowing in REC pressure tubes surrounded by the D2Omoderator. This draws from the CANDU reactor experience, allowing the moderator and coolantto operate at different pressure and temperature design conditions, and enabling neutron moderationto occur at a relatively constant and predictable moderator temperature.
