A PROBABILISTIC METHOD FOR YELLOW TIME DESIGN AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS

Current methods of yellow time design are based on deterministic traffic flow theory and difficult to fully reflecting traffic randomness. In this paper, a probabilistic model was proposed to determine the yellow time according to the occurring probability of dilemma zone (Pυz), considering variability and correlations of the variables, i.e., approach speed V, reaction time t, deceleration rate d. Monte Carlo Simulation was applied. Sensitivity analysis results showed V is the most sensitive followed by d and t. And the yellow time is greatly affected by the correlation coefficients (COR) and coefficients of variation (COV) of the variables. A larger COR would decrease the yellow time with the same PDZ, while a larger COV would make an increase. The relationships between PDZ and the yellow time indicate that a longer yellow time could reduce PDZ. The proposed method could facilitate the design of yellow time based on a given PDZ.
