Heterogeneous Bubble Nucleation in Pool Boiling: Theory and Experiments

Onset of heterogeneous nucleation on heated surfaces under steady and impulse heating conditions, with wall temperature gradient and surface wettability taken into consideration, are analyzed based on the changes in Gibbs free energy. For steady heating condition, the effects of contact angles and wall temperatures on the critical radius and nucleation heat flux are presented. The predicted nucleation heat flux is found to be in good agreement with the classical theory. For nucleation under pulse heating conditions, iterative numerical solutions with temperature distribution based on 1-D transient heat conduction theory are obtained for critical radius and nucleation heat flux. Experiments for onset of heterogeneous nucleation on surfaces submerged in water, alcohol and R113 are carried out under pulse heating at different pulse widths. It is found that the experimental data for nucleation heat flux at short pulse widths agree well with the transient model and those at long pulse widths approach the steady model. Predicted results of the critical radius and nucleation heat flux at various pulse widths for water, alcohol and R113 are presented.
