Impact of Ice Growth on Heat Transfer of SSHE Cooling Surfaces

A mathematical model of heat transfer on scraped-surface heat exchangers (SSHE) with phase change is proposed based on the experimental observation and analysis. The obtained analytical solution to the problem is further expressed as a step function, the explanation of which indicates that heat transfer coefficient undergoes a step increase when phase change takes place. The model was examined by a set a designed experiments which showed a 1~1.5 times increased of the heat transfer coefficient after phase change start in a laboratory bench-top scraped-surface heat exchanger.
