Desiccant Cooling System Design using Charts Generated by a Simple Numerical Algorithm
Desiccant cooling cycles have been increasingly studied, motivated by the low cost of operation, since it consumes low grade thermal energy rather than electric power. The use of water as the refrigerant is also of importance, since it makes the system unhazardous from the environmental viewpoint. Although many recent works have addressed the simulation of the cycle, the design methodology varies from work to work, making difficult to establish an unbiased comparison between independently obtained results. This study presents a simple procedure for desiccant cooling cycle design, in which the overall cycle performance can be evaluated by means of individual cycle components characteristics. An analysis of different cycles with different component arrangements and performance characteristics is carried out for illustrating the methodology. The results are presented as isoline-charts, allowing an easy visualization of the effect of individual components on cycle operation.
