Management of Facial Nerve schwannoma in the Accessory Parotid Region
Facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs) are benign tumors originating from the axonal nerve sheath. Clinically, they are rare and grow slowly with an envelope. They can arise from any site along the course of the facial nerve, from the glial-Schwann cell transition site at the cerebellopontile angle to the peripheral branches in the parotid gland and even to the end branches from the extraparotid portion of the facial nerve. Approximately 9% of FNSs arise from the intraparotid portion of the facial nerve.1-3 To our knowledge, no reports have been published describing the management of FNS in the accessory parotid region. In the present study, 3 cases of FNS in the accessory parotid region are reported with discussion of the clinical manifestation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
