Effects of environmental factors on electricity production of Shewanella decolorationis NTOU1 utilizing lactate as substrate
This study evaluates the optimal condition for Shewanella decolorationis NTOU1 for recovering electricity during the lactate degradation. During the experiments using thin carbon felt (0.1 cm of thickness), the condition consisted of initial pH = 7 and 30 oC gave the greatest charge production of 486 C within 72 hr, but the highest Coulombic efficiency of 19% was found under 37 oC, due to a lesser biomass growth evidenced by electron balance calculations. In addition, pyruvate was readier to be degraded by S. decolorationis NTOU1 than lactate, whereas acetate was harder to be degraded. This result illustrated the acetate accumulation in most of the experimental conditions. During the experiment using thick carbon felt (1.4 cm of carbon felt), S. decolorationis NTOU1 was found to have better adaptability and stronger charge production than S. putrefaciens ATCC8071, which is a potential strain for further application.
