Comparison between Thermophilic and Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Activated Sludge by Combined NaOH-Microwave Pretreatment
In order to investigate the effects of NaOH-microwave pretreated waste activated sludge on thermophilic anaerobic digestion process (TADP) and mesophilic anaerobic digestion process (MADP), the experiments were conducted under thermophilic and mesophilic condition to utilize NaOH-microwave pretreated waste activated sludge as substrate, respectively, by using the semi-continuous flow completely mixed reactors. During the opration period, TADP and MADP were stable and well-functioned without ammonia inhibition. Organic matters reduction of TADP was superior to that of MADP. Methane yield of TADP was higher than that of MADP. Compared with the mesophilic digested sludge, the dewaterability of thermophilic digested sludge was lower. The results showed the semicontinuous TADP and MADP fed with the pretreated waste activated sludge without neutralization was stable.
